We are not a quick fix for mediocre writing. Yes, there are formulas
available; your advisement center was probably quick to supply you with
formulas for how to write a personal statement. Trash them. Ask yourself
this: if you use a formula in writing your personal statement, what
is the best result you can hope for? A technically perfect formulaic
piece. Not only that, but your essay will be based on a variant of the
same formula most other applicants relied on for their essay. That is
not the way to make a statement. No matter how good a formula is, if
you use it, it will dominate the piece; it will dictate what you say
and how you say it. It will produce a formula piece just as surely as
a tight rhyme scheme will inevitably lead to a bad poem in the hands
